STICK MARSH, FARM 13

FARM 13 / STICK MARSH FISHING REPORT

March 23, 2001

Warning: The water remains 40 inches low. You will hit the levees in most places in the Farm 13 side unless you idle across them. The stumps fields outside the ramp area must still be negotiated with care.

No excuses for proper safety precautions!!!

Artificials have certainly picked up. We had Gary Sale and Jim Funkhouser, from Virginia, with us for 3 days and caught a LOT of fish on worms, buzz baits, spinnerbaits, and shallow crank plugs. It was so good that we purchased shiners one morning, but never used them. Sure wasted a buck or two there, but the artificial bite was too good to stop fishing. So, I have a livewell full of shiners living on the aerator. They seem to be doing fine, so it provides a great excuse for me to go hit the pond this afternoon!

We had a great number of fish. The first day was a bit slow, as we search for spawning crappie for Gary's freezer. For the next three days, counting my wife fishing with us on one day, I believe we averaged 60 fish per day. I don't know that we ever had a real giant bass on, which was unusual considering the number caught. But, we did boat 7-8 nice ones.

The water was about 3 ˝ feet deep and I could see the bottom with my polarized glasses. The cover was wood and grass, with the grass well below the surface. For an unknown reason, a 5 or 6 inch plastic lizard produced much better than a regular worm when Texas-rigged. In line with the water depth, the shallow crank plug was a Swimmin' Image. The buzz baits were small sizes, 1/4th and 1/8th ounces. The spinnerbaits were white and chartreuse. The most consistent producer was the floating worm cast over and around the wood and just allowed to slowly sink on a slack line. Any movement of the line on the water indicated fish.

I believe we will be able to see improved topwater activity from now through July. And, I fully expect a lot of 7-11 pound bass to come from the submerged grass areas of the southeast side of Farm 13. As time goes by, we will see how right those predications are.

A common question that we get: "Is there somewhere close to get bait and tackle?" This is where we get our bait.
