STICK MARSH, FARM 13

FARM 13 / STICK MARSH FISHING REPORT

March 16, 2001

Golllll-leeee, to quote Gomer Pyle. What a couple of days we had Wed and Thurs! Had Gary and Wayne from Virginia out with shiners and with artificials both days. Wed. was a real hummer and we even coined a couple of new species for the Farm.

First, the bass ate the shiners, but no big ones. Tried hard and moved around a bit to those predictable places where old Grundoon usually hangs out, but only found her kids. But, there were lots of them. Then, we hung two at once!! The water boiled, the mud rolled and I swallowed my Double Bubble chaw. One rod went south, away from the boat and nothing even slowed him down. The other, on Gary's rod, came at him and around end of the boat, bowing the rod tip into the water all the way. As he went around us, it appeared Gary couldn't stop him so I told him to just thumb it down and either stop him or break off.

Well, this new Farm 13 species of shiner eater is now called a 'Farm 13 tarpon', due to his power and speed. Gary's Farm 13 'tarpon' was about 7 feet long, with a long snout and some VERY big teeth. I have never seen a gator take a shiner before and saw 2 do it at the same time that day. I even got the picture of Gary and the tarpon in action. We also did very well Thursday on shiners (see Gary's big bass photo), even though the winds were 25-35 MPH. The grass mats knocked the waves down very well and all you need in a couple of really good anchors. On the artificial side, we got hit exceptionally well on the floating worm and jerk baits. Even had a couple of 4-5 lb. fish take the Rat-L-Trap, but the grass made it tough to fish.

We found the Farm 13 'Grouper' to be active, as both Gary and Wayne tangled with 10 lb. + Mudfish which got all the kinks out of the lines.

George Welcome's suggested path through the stumps, near the ramp area, is probably the best way to go now. I had to help 2 boat get off stumps or out of limbs yesterday over in that East path I usually take. Saw an aluminum rig tear a hole in its hull trying to come in, too. Thank goodness the bilge pump worked.

You gotta be exceptionally careful out there now. Idle over EVERY levee in the Farm side. We may have some rain the next 3-4 days and that may bring the levels up some, but my gauge says it is 39 inches down, as of yesterday.

A common question that we get: "Is there somewhere close to get bait and tackle?" This is where we get our bait.
