FARM 13 / STICK MARSH FISHING REPORT
March 9, 2001
Folks, when is it going to stop!! Someone pulled the plug out.
The bottom has fallen out of the stock market AND the Stick Marsh. The Marsh is 37 inches down (by my unofficial measuring marker system). I watch 4 boats and a pontoon boat try for 30 minutes before they could make it through the stump field. My half moon arc route towards the east side seems best now. I am just about at the point where I could tell you it is not worth the chance of damaging your boat and motor. I sure would not make a LONG trip to come fish the Stick Marsh now, UNLESS you use a guide and his boat. Hugh Crumpler has even switched from his nice BassCat to an old Ranger he picked up somewhere.
Once again, you are advised NOT to try and take pontoon boats in at all. I suspect you will be forever hung in the stumps just outside the ramp area. If the forecast calls for STRONG winds, especially from the south,
west, or NW, you are advised to consider not trying to traverse the stumps in a glass boat. A heavy
chop on the water is going to take you up and drop you down on some of those stumps. The brush
and limbs are OK, but the stumps will crush the hull and the wind and waves will certainly up those
odds tremendously.
Some of the levees in the farm can be hit easily now. It is best to idle over them. The worst is the Farm side E/W canal from the gate top the shack, especially near the gate. DO NOT get on the corners of the intersections of the canals; you WILL ground out.
We are on a full moon now. I will be looking for the bedding crappie and will let you know when I find them. I was out yesterday and found some small bass along the wood on the Farm's west bank. Easy to fish the grass and wood with a floating worm and in the holes with a spinnerbait. Went to the north half of the N/S canal on the Farm that we show on the interactive map as F5 - F7. About midway on the canal, the grass is pretty sparse and we did exceptionally well on a medium runner (Cordell CC Shad) and a Carolina rigged worm. Must have been a school that we fell on just right. Had one on the CC Shad that scaled 8 lbs. And, another that was a good 6. From there, we went to the north half of the middle N/S canal (D4 - D7). The grass is thick along the levees and the levees are SHALLOW! We fished the east side of the grass line to the east of the canal, approximately in the middle section. No schools, but a lot of singles and doubles. The C-rig was OK, but a Rat-L-Trap was better than the plug. You could snap it free of the grass when it got hung a lot better than the CC Shad. So, looks like fishing is picking up. I expect topwater to get right in 30 days, or so.

A common question that we get: "Is there somewhere close to get bait and tackle?" This is where we get our bait.
