FARM 13 / STICK MARSH FISHING REPORT
Jan. 19, 2001
The water levels have come up a couple of inches, but are still 20 inches low. So, no fast running in the Stick Marsh side until you get to the rim canal, Vern!
Florida's longest continuous cold spell in decades appears to have ended. As I write this, it has been in the low 70's for 2 days and the outlook is the same for the next 5-6 days. That means the fish are about to turn it on big time. Water temperature related slowdowns are relative to the part of the country. In Virginia, the bass stay pretty active until the water gets to about 48 degrees. In Florida, they tend to slow dramatically if it gets below 55. But, the bass are trying to spawn and any rising temperatures will get them moving. If you can see sand along any shallow zone, watch for the bedding fish to be there, too. The crappie, which start their spawn about 10-15 February each year may be a bit late, but I expect the warmth we are having will continue and they will be close to on-time. I caught a few from three different locations yesterday, and all had fairly good egg development (pretty good fried last night, too!!)
Shiners have been the bait of choice during the cold, but even they have slowed a good bit. Live bait will continue to be great through the end of April. But, artificials will improve tremendously as the water warms the rest of this month. By 20-25 January, expect worms and spinnerbaits to kick in well. By 1 February, shallow crank plugs and Rat-L-Traps will be the hot lures. Also, if the warming continues, watch for the stump beds in the South end of the Farm to draw a lot of bass in for spawning and for feeding.
We had Al McCellan out this week teaching shiners how to swim. Even with the bite off some, he managed 30 largemouths to 7 lbs. (refer to picture of a happy angler!).

A common question that we get: "Is there somewhere close to get bait and tackle?" This is where we get our bait.
