COULD IT/MIGHT IT BE THE BEST CRAPPIE JIG COLOR OF ALL TIME?!!!!?
When I was a kid (eons ago!) in Arkansas in the Mississippi River bottoms, we found the perfect bait for trot-line catfish and cane-pole crappie - GOLDFISH!! They were too expensive to just purchase at a store. But, once in awhile, the local bait distributor would get in a shipment of live minnows with a high content of gold ones. We treated them just like their color--GOLD. Old Mr. Barnes had a standing agreement with my daddy to buy them all, right on the spot. I still don't know why their coloration was such a fantastic fish-catcher; possibly it was just their visibility. They didn't 'shine', per se. They were just a gold hue with a tiny bit of red. Our jig manufacturer stumbled upon some jig body wrapping which closely resembled the long-ago goldfish that I remembered. I got one preliminary sample jig to verify the color, agreed with it and the contrasting chartreuse tail, and ordered 200 jigs to work with. Of course, in the meantime, I took the one sample GOLDFISH Flash jig (as it's called) fishing just pior to Thanksgiving. It worked really well for me on two afternoons; so well, I figure it earned its place in the PERFECT Crappie Jig lineup. I hope it will do as well for you.
We introduced the 'PERFECT' Crappie Jig a little over 20 years ago. In that period, a zillion of these little 'crappie magnets' have hit the water. One angler from Visalia, CA, stated that he was afraid the crappie were going to become extinct in his local waters due to our jig's effectiveness. He stated that it was all the 'locals' were using and it was even better than live bait. Now, that's a pretty strong testimonial! But, if it is not the absolute BEST crappie jig you have ever used, you will flat get your money back, no questions asked. It is REALLY that good!!)
The 'PERFECT' Jig, designed by the late Bob Young [except for the FireBug series], is the best crappie jig I have ever found. It has no bells, whistles, rattles, or any of those extemporaneous things designed to make it seem a 'magic' lure. It is just a quality-made crappie jig that out-fishes any I have used in the past.
Here are the design criteria elements we used to select this excellent jig:
- It is streamlined, with a compact body and a feather tail -- no floppy legs or tail to catch the wind and reduce casting distance, or cause line twisting;
- The hook eye is set back in the lead head to make the jig set level when fished vertically;
- The weight is an optimum 1/16th oz. for 4-8 lb. test lines; add a BB-split shot for heavier applications.
- The body is heavy chenille wrapped, with our secret securing method; it will never tear or come apart, as will plastics;
- The small hook will not ream out a hole in the crappie's mouth, as a big hook does, possibly allowing him to get away.
Each color was carefully chosen to provide optimum fish attraction/visibility under specific conditions. Each was fully tested in locations across the USA to assure its 'catchability'. (We provide only 'fish-catching' lures, not 'fisherman-catching colors').
In addition to our basic colors that have been proven over 20 years of nationwide success, we introduce the following NEW colors (see pictures/descriptions above and below):
GOLDFISH FLASH - Goldfish/gold minnows have long been a highly desireable live bait for trotline catfish and crappie. Stream trout go for them, as well. We put our efforts into a design that used colors that most closely approximated live gold fish and, so far, it is proving highly effective, particularly in clearer waters.
WHITE LIGHTNING - For clear water, whether clean or with just tannic acid stain, this white and flash-based jig is hard to beat. It is made with lots of white milar flash in the body, plus sprigs of flash material in the feathered tail. We tried to copy the coloration and flash of small grass shrimp found in the roots of floating vegetation. In addition, it is a GREAT imitation of small baitfish coloration. This is the BEST pure white jig we have found.
The FLASH GHOST - the body of the famous Gray Ghost, with the addition of a strongly contrasting chartreuse tail. Visibility is excellent with this color combo.
The BLACK FLASH - Another high contrast jig which has shown excellent results across all spectrums of water clarity; from extremely clear to very murky run-off waters.
The BLUE FLASH - A medium contrast color mix of a sky-blue body and chartreuse tail; anglers in East Texas, Oklahoma, Iowa, Indiana and Florida swear by it, citing the blue color as the main factor.
The LAKE FORK SPECIAL - This is simply a Gray Ghost body with a blue tail added; again, we note the blue coloration; this was a highly requested jig for a long while, particularly around the Lake Fork, Texas, area; in fact, we were told it was the most popular color on that lake for the 15 years before we finally made one.
The GRAY GHOST 'HI-VIS' - What we did here was simply add a few sprigs of 'flash' material to the tail of the basic Gray Ghost; this adds a bit of extra visibility in murky water; it is in high demand, espeically during the early-summer rainy season.
These new colors came, in most cases, as a result of popular demand. Our manufacturer tied 'em, we tried 'em, and they are absolutely great.
The White Lightening is a flash-based jig, intended to be highly visible and attractive under ANY water conditions. It is also a nearly-duplicate of the visual color/profile of a grass shrimp, a strong crappie food source in vegetated waters (if you have floating hyacinths in your waters, grab one and shake the hair-like root system over the boat floor; it's amazing how many grass shrimp will fall out; this is why making holes in hyacinth mats and dipping jigs in them is so effective, especially in hot weather: shade and food, all in one place!!).
The following pictures and descriptions are for our original colors and styles of jigs. They started it all and each generally has its own group of devotees. Interestingly enough, the Gray Ghost (which is the NATIONAL BEST SELLER) has a significantly high following in, of all places, California! Goes to show that the western crew knows its crappie jigs!!
